My favorite part of Amistad's public education mission is talking to kids, and one of the countless wonderful things about our stay here in Lisboa is the fact that we've had a lot of school groups come visit the boat.  I love the genuine, inexhaustible curiosity of a group of six year olds all clamoring for your attention and shouting questions over each other.  This common scenario has become even more hectic and exciting with all of the kids speaking Portuguese and our excellent translators struggling to keep up.  Their questions are usually along the lines of  "Where do you sleep?" and "What do you eat?" but occasionally they can really surprise you with their insight.  Today a student from the age 10-12 group asked one of the crew whether racism came from slavery or slavery came from racism, a question I've been turning over in my mind since I heard it this morning.
