The saying goes that ships and sailors rot in port Ð and I believe every word of it. Try though we might, the strict order that we adhere to at sea begins to dissolve as soon as our lines hit the dock. The logic of survival informs our regimen at sea Ð one that we commit to completely. On shore, the consequences of disorder are less tangible, and the distractions many. I find myself inventing projects to keep my skills sharp Ð an activity that I am quite sure is futile in the end, but comforting none-the-less. We all fight it, but eroding vigilance is inevitable, and just as we regain our sea legs when we put out to sea, we also much re-tune our sea sense.
