A Wet Day E-mail

When I rolled out of my bunk this morning, refreshed after a solid five hours of sleep, I pulled on my hoodie and sunglasses to get some air on deck before lunch and my afternoon watch.  As I climbed up the ladder and peered through the hatch I was confused to see the sun shining and rain pouring down at the same time.  When I stuck my head up I realized that the rain was in fact sea spray, and that we were barreling into the chop on our way back past Dover.  The boat ran so rough and so wet all day that the students hardly believed me when I told them that we were actually only in three foot seas and a force four wind.  I have to admit that I could hardly believe it myself when I was out in the head rig to loose the stay sail and it seemed as though I was moments away from either getting launched a few feet into the air or dunked into the sea and head lines knocked out of my hands by the waves of seawater hurtling over the rails. I do feel like I deserved to get a little wet after the ridiculously ideal sailing conditions we’ve had over the past several weeks.
