I was quite surprised at London’s docklands museum, the use of the building which the museum is now located was a warehouse where they had brought enslaved Africans and stored sugar during the times of the Transatlantic Slave Trade but had no real exhibit on the topic of the trade except for 4 panels, which really never got into the story of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and sugar coated it with the wealth which the people involved profited from. Seeing as it is the bicentenary of the abolishment of the Transatlantic Slave trade the Docklands being a bit behind has been working on a new exhibit called London, Sugar and Slavery, which will be opening in November. While at the museum we got to chat with the community access officer who informed us that understanding London’s history is just the start to understanding their full role in the past of slavery and commemorating it today. I really wish I could have been able to see the exhibit, but it would be something to come back to London for. Trackback(0)
