The Freedom Schooner Amistad is headed towards Horta, on the island of Faial, in the Azores today.  While sailing ahead of a weather system they have been avoiding for the last few days, the ship has headed south and east to seek the shelter of the Azorean high pressure system. During this time, one of the professional crew members sustained a foot injury and the decision has been made to have the injury x-rayed at a medical facility. With the Azores as close as they are, and the weather still unfolding to the north and moving eastward, this detour  of 150 nautical miles to Horta will likely not impact the schooner’s timing for turning north to England.  The captain, crew, and Sankofa College students are in great spirits and enjoying wonderful weather. The injured crew member is keeping up great spirits as well. Check the website for journal updates from the students and crew as they continue towards London on their historic Atlantic Freedom Tour to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade.
