Michael Simon was born and raised in Liverpool, England.  He comes from a family that has been actively engaged in improving the lives and social conditions of Black people living in Liverpool.  He is currently a student at Liverpool Community College and when he returns to England he plans to attend a university where he can study fine arts.  

Michael is a person who enjoys working in challenging situations and implementing solutions to problems.  These are two great assets for any crew members who decides to take on the challenge of sailing across the North Atlantic.  Before leaving England to join the first leg of the 2007-2008 Atlantic Freedom Tour, Michael had been working with in an educational setting supporting young people with severe physical disabilities.  In the future, he envisions himself working for an organization that takes an ethical approach to furthering the varied interested of people living in different parts of the African diaspora.  In his spare time Michael enjoys walking and camping in the countryside of Wales and Scotland.   He also enjoys exploring different aspects of technology an in his own words, “I consider myself an unashamed geek.”
