I was roused from my sleep with a nice wake-up from Tim. A deep sleep where for a moment I couldn’t believe he was actually telling me to wake up.  Some mornings are easy to wake up to.  Today, I laid in the heat of my bunk for a few moments trying to fight the pull of sleep luring me back.  Four hours of watch, then breakfast and morning cleanup. Then perhaps a bit more sleep.

On dawn watch again, my favorite watch. The morning light started hinting its arrival at 3:30 am.  Almost there, anticipation, and then all of a sudden it is light, the soft light of morning.  The horizon is decorated with blue cumulous clouds with a background of pink.  I was on the helm and Seth’s silhouette stood bow watch.

Halsey asked a few students last night if in March they thought that they’d be sailing across the Atlantic on a boat this summer.  Most had other plans, other expectation until this opportunity arose.  Now the 19 of us are on this schooner working together.  I love the random conversations that pop up, unplanned, ones that could never be scripted and yet offer us great insight. I watched two students do laundry together on deck yesterday.  They did not initially like each other during the shore component, and were not thrilled to learn they’d be on watch together.  Now, one month since the students arrived on the boat, they willingly put their dirty clothes into a bucket together and joked around as they mixed soap and sea water with dirt and later took bucket showers on deck.
