Field day on the Amistad E-mail

A field day is typically associated with getting out of your school/work place, going to explore and see new things, eat ice cream and matters of that such. This field day however was something completely different;

it was a day of cleaning to the max! My face dropped as soon as I heard the plan and I have to admit, cleaning the head in the fos’cle isn’t my perfect start to the day, but we’re showing Amistad some deserved love. However it wasn’t all sweat and grime; later in the day there was an all hands deck wash, which was really fun, and so cooling on such a hot day. Erica’s constant singing of the Amistad songs she wrote help to keep the energy up. C watch are all looking forward to their saltwater showers tomorrow in the 75°F water.

Around 7pm, at the end of my watch, some people on deck spotted something and called out to the rest of us: four or five sperm whales floating on the water in the distance. To our delight they came closer and it was incredible to watch them swim in front of the setting sun. We’ve seen so much recently which I have wanted to see my whole life.

After dinner clean up, I had an opportunity to sit outside on deck and just be. I looked up to the sky and watched the sails dance in the wind. I thought of home, friends and family and how far I was away from everything. Tonight, I liked hearing the ocean and seeing the stars on the boat but I know and have the security that I’m going back home. I can only begin to imagine how those same noises we’re hearing today could have added to the desperation and anxieties of the captives. This ocean is so expansive and a great mystery to many. I never imagined myself to be exploring this sliver of it but it feels exciting that I am.
