At last we’re away E-mail

At last we’re away, schoon’un south east to leave Sable Island to port and make the turn towards Falmouth.  A loose ‘towards’ as we’ll keep well south of reported ice the other side of the Bank.  Topsail’s up and pulling well in a mild Beaufort 2/3, synoptic is favourable for the night so it’ll stay flying. Smiling at how much trimming it reminds me of trimming a kite. At 135° Mag we’re the tops’l luff just keeps curling on the uproll, that’ll do us good all night if the breeze holds. Forecast wind should start backing over the next 24, hope we make south sufficient before that happens.

The departure out of Sambro was radar guided, coastal fog was thick but we were soon through it. Saphra, fresh out of a wisdom tooth extraction yesterday, pulled the helm straw as we finally broke out umbilical with Canada. Nice folk, especially the Coast Guard, they couldn’t have done more for us…a job for another lifetime perhaps. These guys were there for us today, cameras snapping our first crew photo since I joined at least.  “Wherrrrrrrreeeee’ssssss Johnnnnny?” In the shore Royal Flush portaloo, we had to take the pics and get on with rigging to leave, I took one of him solo after he returned and will add him later to the group (…that’s why God made Photoshop).

Managed to get two minutes with my daughter Martha on the phone yesterday from Mishoo’s, couldn’t get through to parents or Sara and annoyed but thankful even for the short impatient sound of my eleven year old.  Dad’s leaving for England tomorrow, sailing for many weeks.  “Whatever…” Ahh, a father’s pleasures in the almost teen zone.  Still, wouldn’t wish for the alternative, can’t imagine not being a Dad at this age, the best thing going and was reminded so indirectly by Nadia tonight while we were washing dishes.  She said I reminded her a bit of her father, which put a smile on as she clearly didn’t become such a fine person without a decent Dad. Looking forward to meeting him in England on her arrival.

Off watch now, need to put some sleep in the bank for later, back on at 0300. Love to my girls, Kent
