We are still docked and feeling anxious. It wasn’t a super exciting day but it was productive none-the-less. We worked on the storm trysail, which is now ready to go up and after lunch we watched a documentary called America’s greatest Resource. It marks the abolition of Slavery in 1807. We both found the documentary to be informative at a beginners level however we have learnt so much about slavery on the journey so far that we feel we already knew most of what was being presented. We did, however, find some interesting points, which created a mixture of feelings.
I was first surprised to see stained-glass windows of a church displaying scenes of emancipated slaves. Seeing black people in this display was a huge departure from the typical biblical scenes that I am so used to seeing. Another scene that stood out to us was the display of a real-life black and white photograph of two slaves in chains. The expressions on their faces, portrays a level of emotion and human-suffering that is not always fully depicted in the paintings of slaves that are far more prevalent. Comments
