| Time flies on the Amistad, but water pumps sure don’t |

Today is the 21st day we’ve been on Amistad! I was floored when we realized how much time we had actually been on board. Thinking back, I’m realizing how much we’ve had to do since leaving New Haven: projects in Newport and Halifax, days in port in the States and in Nova Scotia working on every part of the ship, learning so many different things from how clean a head properly to how the sails move the boat, to going aloft, to cooking (and eating) meals. I had a little bit of time to read more of Two Years Before the Mast (Author: Richard H. Dana, Jr.), which is so far an excellent read, although I keep having to quiz crew members about some of the technical sailing terminology (close-hauled? scuttle-butt? bunt? earing?) that I’m not familiar with yet.
There are big jellyfish in the harbor here! We saw at least two different kinds drifting by yesterday, along with several apparently lost fisherman’s gloves. We’re still docked in Sambro Harbor, waiting for the mysterious water pump to arrive. It has been so foggy that you can actually see the tendrils of fog creeping around between the ship and the dock and between people on deck. Yesterday’s barbecue was great- although I’m enjoying living on Amistad, it was nice to get off the boat to go somewhere other than our friendly neighborhood port-o-potti (using the shore heads means less pump-outs for the tanks on the boat). Gina and Dani are just as skilled cooking on a borrowed gas grill as they are dealing with Madame Pele, our ship stove. Time to go, schoolwork time is over! Comments
