Hey,

It was a bunch of laughs today. People practicing beat boxing and making jokes made the day go quite fast. In the morning we did a rotation of academic work and boat work in our watches. We all have book reports to do with a crew member so as I have already read my book, ‘A small place’ by Jamaica Kincaid, I had to give a summary to a deckhand in my watch. It’s a really good book and I find her remarks really funny- especially about the British and the whole Western world ‘thing’. Even though I am British, I agree with what she says! It was good to get some academic work done as I love reading and before now have felt there is no time to do any of the assignments we have been set. While doing boat ‘stuff’ we messed about with Vaseline for a bit (which is all over the masts).

After a wonderful lunch we had class altogether-students, crew and staff. We read through Frederick Douglas speech on the 4th of July where he talked about what it meant to the slave. It was excellent and I will definitely read it again. The topics he discussed are still relevant today and should be addressed and so I think it should be published and read again, even every year on the 4th of July. It’s surprising how it can easily be used today as it shows how little things have changed as a whole. He talks about what is actually being celebrated on Independence Day and what it means, addressing a number of subjects that we would not even think about. Everyone all over America and beyond should read it.

Well, we are still in Sambro Harbour much to my dismay. We are still waiting on the pump. I can’t believe the date. I only just thought about it today. Its actually going quite fast but I just want to see England again. That is going to feel so good.

Saphra
