Here is just a quick note to say who I am and where I come from, etc. I am 17 years old and currently live in Eltham, London, but originally am from Hackney (North London). At the moment I am attending Sixth Form College studying English Lit, History, Art and Politics at Crown Woods School for a two-year course before I hope to study History and English Literature at university. Anyway, away from classrooms and examinations I will talk a bit about my interests, hopes and why I joined the crew of Amistad America! First of all, my main passion is music. I love learning the history, studying and writing about it, especially of modern music ranging from the genres: rock, metal, blues, funk, punk and all the sub genres and fusions within. I think music is an amazing way to tap into the thoughts, anxieties, loves, hates and history of that time. In the future I hope to become a music journalist; traveling the world, exploring music and writing about musicians is my idea of heaven! I play the flute, love going to the Tate Modern and like playing netball, football and traveling around by my mountain bike. Traveling and exploring is the main way I would like to discover and learn about different cultures and societies. Since I was a kid I loved adventure stories. Reading and watching them, I would spend hours exploring stories such as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Emil and the Detectives and Clash of the Titans. My fascination with pirates at one stage influenced my long phrases of ‘dressing up’ and imagination…I was a dreamy child. Anyway, now after naturally changing, developing and learning I am beginning to put a simple story such as an adventure story into some sort of social history and context, bringing a new meaning and understanding. This can relate to the story of the Amistad. After beginning this intensive course, we all have really began to see how big the scope of the issues are and how almost nothing is as simple as it first may seem. Misinterpretations and lack of true understanding has led to many assumptions: for example, that La Amistad was a slave ship rather than the fundamental fact that it was a cargo schooner, which was never meant to hold any humans is sometimes missed out down the line. This, in my opinion shows how learning and education is the key to try and get rid of these assumptions. To learn about this in this sort of setting is definitely different; by doing this intensive course with no distractions from the outside world is pretty hectic! In school sometimes, you get caught up and blinded by the grade system, ending up doing something simply for the grade rather than learning for the sake of learning So anyway, doing this is will definitely be a major challenge, but in a good way and something I will never have the opportunity to do again; I cant wait! Thank you for taking the time to read about me and I hope you enjoy and learn from all of our blogs and podcasts. Comments
