The Amistad’s Atlantic Freedom Tour is deeply symbolic of the historic slave trade and all that humanity has since overcome. Even this Souvenir Journal represents our shared history, with the design chosen to pay respect to the Mende homeland of the Amistad Captives: present-day Sierra Leone. As on its tricolor flag, here the color green represents the country’s hilly mountains and natural resources, white stands for unity and justice the region has fought so hard to restore, and the blue is symbolic of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean waters that join, not separate, our continents.
