Amistad Committee, Inc., organized in 1988, commissioned the statue of Sengbe Pieh and fellow Sierra Leoneans that sits in front of the City Hall of New Haven, the former site of the jail where the captives were imprisoned. The Connecticut General Assembly in 1995 mandated the Committee to organize and coordinate the official State of Connecticut Freedom Trail. It continues its mission to bring the lessons of the Amistad story for contemporary United States.

AMISTAD America, Inc., was created as a consortium between Mystic Seaport, the Connecticut Afro-American Historical Society, the Amistad Committee of New Haven, Amistad Affiliates of New York and other interested individuals working in partnership to promote the Amistad project.  Since Amistad was launched in March of 2000, hundreds of thousands of individuals have crossed her decks. In the past several years, Amistad America has grown from a small regional resource to an organization with international influence.
