New duty - ship's engineer... E-mail

We are doing deck tours in Vineyard Haven, on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, in Massachusetts. It is beautiful here with a brisk breeze and sunny skies. It reminds me of wind-swept England. This would be a great place to have a beach house in the summer, not too hot and not too dry.

Katelynn Shaw, our engineer, has recently left the ship to go back to school. So, I have been made the new engineer. It is a big responsibility: I think of it as taking care of things that flow. Water, electricity, diesel fuel, all flow, and I am the designated person to manage them and figure things out when they don’t work. It's lots of fun learning a whole new system on the ship. The rest of the crew is great at lending a hand when there are lots of things going on, like when we leave the dock.

Life on the ship isn’t all work though. Tomorrow is my birthday and we are trying to think of interesting things to do. When we hit shore, we sometimes get kind of crazy and creative when we are bored. We make art, play music, play games, joke around. For instance, our medical officer sewed a button in my skin today. It’s always fun and interesting times aboard Amistad.
