Hello, My Dears!
Today, well even last night has been perhaps the most dramatic and most frightening times onboard for me. It all started with your basic switching of the watch which itself was very complicated since the working sheet of the foresail decided to pop out and the sail was flogging very dangerously around the deck. Also, to our stern was an amazing sight of a lightning storm that filled the horizon, constant flashes until at least the end of the watch illuminated the sky, which almost makes you appreciate storms for the beauty?
Later in the watch, while on the helm, the ship herself was not being very cooperative for me and had a thing for rolling a lot! From side to side and to make things worse one of our engines went out (lack of oil pressure or something like that). But it was the final test so to speak (of my sanity) that I shall remember for a very long time, to the point where I shall tell it in a story form with dramatic music playing in the background. That, or just write a book about it with equally dramatic devices. Towards the end of the watch, [Capt] Eliza came out on deck and made the decision along with Logan to do a maneuver which forced the sails to pass to the opposite side, causing Amistad to cease its movement. Well our readings say we were moving at 2-3 knots it did not seem like we were moving and the worse thing is this, My Dears, as of today we have drifted 20 miles away from our destination. (So I’m told!)
But now we are now going to fire up the engines and see if we can get moving again. I hope we do mainly because these waters are starting to freak me out ever so slightly and I know what you must be thinking: how un-sailor of him. But to that I say, I have sense. With that, My Dears, I bid you farewell, and if you see a god of some kind, please ask them to send a fair wind, I say again, a FAIR WIND!
