Yesterday, the Freedom Schooner Amistad left the amazing country of Barbados, leaving behind a beautiful collection of people, places and things. I would like to personally thank Thomas and Cathleen Loftfield as well as Ron, Serena and Liam Jones for their incredible generosity and kindness.
I haven't written anything since the day we arrived in Barbados, mostly because I have been 150% consumed with what the island has to offer. The 2+ weeks we spent in Barbados were incredible, ranging from off days including breath-taking beaches, island safaris, incredible evening entertainment ranging from shows to obviously lively bar scenes. We also spent an evening at the US ambassador's private estate, visited numerous historic sites such as Codrington Plantation and Newton Plantation, home to one of the only excavated slave burial sites in the country. Oh yeah, and Amistad also toured only about a couple thousand of the public.
A select few of the Amistad crew, including myself, spent a lovely evening at the home of Thomas and Cathleen Loftfeild. Without a doubt a highlight of our stay in Barbados, the entire Amistad crew was invited to the home of Ron and Serena Jones.
I will certainly miss Barbados, although at this point of the trip I am getting excited to return home.
Ben and I have been talking about finally getting Fogo home and letting her run freely through the yard. We joke about her reaction to the first time she sees a squirrel or deer. Her life has consisted entirely of the Amistad; she literally knows nothing of the huge world that surrounds her.
I also can't wait to get back to watching the Sox and jokin' around with the mahal crew, I miss all you guys. I think about my friends everyday and really wonder how everyone is doing finishing up these last couple years of school. I am without a doubt happy I am here on Amistad and have partaken of this incredible journey, but I still wish I could share experiences with all of you as well.
It is unbelievable that Amistad is on its leg home. The trip that once seemed like it would never end is now closing in on Charleston, with less that a month to go (for me). The crew has begun to talk about their plans after we reach SC; our final destination truly is in sight.
As I write this Amistad is some 125 miles from Barbados, cruisin' around 5 knots, northwest of St. Lucia and about 15 miles west of Martinique. Within the coming days Amistad will sail past all the other islands including Dominica, Guadeloupe, Antigua, Barbuda, through the U.S. Virgin Islands, past Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic and Haiti, on past Cuba and eventually past Florida and Georgia. Amistad will then push on to Charleston, South Carolina. We truly are Caribbean Cruisin'!
