Our speed average is still very good and we will probably reach Barbados before expected… I am not going to say which day I think we will get there, because it's bad luck! But it will be soon… Once we arrive near the island we will wait anchored for a few days before touching land because there will be a big reception for us on the 4th of April. The Captain said that until then we have lots of work to do on the boat, so that it looks pretty for all the visitors that come aboard.

I have decided that after a couple of weeks in Barbados I will go back home to Brazil. I was supposed to continue on Amistad until Charleston, in the USA, but I think this Atlantic crossing has already given me a lot to think about and I need some time to reflect on everything that has happened to me in the last eight months. For those that don’t know, I went to Cape Verde in September, shortly after my graduation, and I haven’t been home since. I now feel it's time to go back and sort my life out.

While I am here, I intend to enjoy the best of it by learning and sharing my own experience. Tomorrow I will present to the rest of the group some thoughts about Brazil. As the only Brazilian on the boat, I feel that is my duty to explain some things about my country… The other crewmembers have already asked a lot of questions about Carnival and local traditions, but I want to show everyone that Brazil is so much more than that. It’s huge and has a lot of different influences… I just hope I can explain in a way that people will understand and get curious enough to want to visit!

Thanks mum and Pedro for the comments, they really keep me going here. About the pictures, I don’t appear because I took them! But the Captain said she will send some pictures of me for the website! Miss you all!

Dearest daughter
How lovelly to see your picture! You look healthy and happy. I miss you with all my heart.
As for your decision to come back home straight from Barbados, I’m sure you must have your reasons to change plans. But I must confess that my mind is split in two: part of it is very happy because now I know I will see you again soon; the other part tells me I should present you the “hundreds” of reasons why I believe you should not leave the expedition now. But I trust you undestand what it means to give it all up at this point.
Anyways, Barbados must be a wonderful country with wonderful people. I hope you have the chance to make the best of your stay there: learn all you can about it; talk to ordinary people on the streets; write it all on your Diary; take pictures; savour their taste; try to feel their feelings. And give all you can in return to their hospitality.

I'm glad you will also have the chance to tell your crewmates that Brazil is not all about Carnival, "samba" and half-naked "mulatas" dancing in Rio de Janeiro. Or worse: about violence, corruption, trafic, drugs and prostitution. As you say, Brazil is huge and has suffered lots of influences from different cultures but, even though each one of us is unique, we share a feeling of pride of having received a little bit of all those influences.

Oh! Almost forgot: even though we have had so many influences in Brazil, yes, we all do love soccer!
Love, Mãe.

Ohh! Dont leave the expedition Carla, imagines if Neil Amstrong had the same feeling and had abandoned Apollo 12 before arriving the moon ! ? I think that he never would pardon he self and be difficult to get a taxi to return, I can still paint a sadder picture if this did not touched you, Please stay until the end.

Ohh !!!
