Another Rainy Day E-mail

Some times it's the simple things in life that give us the most pleasure. Today I had one of those pleasures dropped into my lap. It rained. Not the long cooling rain of a hot summer day, nor the rain that clears the muggy air, or the rain that slowly puts you to sleep. It was not of long duration, but its short life was God sent. You see I have not seen any rain in probably over 150 days. Through the short winter of last year, through the staggering heat and dust of West Africa, and now the most predictable Trades of the Middle Passage, today for the first time, I got rained on. Such a joy to watch others scramble for cover, don foul weather gear and close hatches. Fogo and I simply held our ground for a few minutes and enjoyed. As the pup dove for cover under the small boat I realized that she was shaking with fear. It was then that I understood that this wonderful animal, at her age, had NEVER ever seen rain, and that I probably should not expect her to sit still, get wet, and enjoy. Life for her will certainly be full of surprises when she lands in Old Lyme and experiences grass, trees, dirt and squirrels not to mention hard wood floors that are not continually rocking and rolling. As the ship closes in on Barbados, I think of my family and friends at home and want you all to know that you all are always on my mind. You are all loved and missed. Our arrival date for Charleston remains as May15th, and Toby, Fogo and I look forward to reuniting with everyone then. I do promise to be more productive as to staying in touch For Stan and Nick... I just realized that the wood fish you gave me is now half way across the Atlantic Ocean for the 4th time !!! I will have the entire crew sign it for you, and present it to you boys in Charleston. By the way, we have not yet gotten Little Mickey down out of the rigging.

Hello my brother,
I'm awfully glad to hear y'all have made it safely to Barbados, no doubt in due measure to your fine skills. Sounds like it's been an eventful trip, the book and movie will be great to see.
It's still winter up here in NS, but I'm glad to be home. Take care. Heather

Hey Ben! Just wanted to say hi, and I will probably see you in the fall. I am back at Rockport Marine and we are building a replica vessel for Charleston named "Adventure". You might be familiar with her, because the one we are building is a replacement for another one that was built in the 60's and has since fallen into disrepair. She is a colonial square-rigged ketch of about 1670, and apparently represents a similar vessel that was documented as sailing into Charleston around that time. Anyway, I am pretty sure I will be part of the crew that delivers her, and I plan on spending some time hanging out with Newman once I get there. I hope all is well with you, and good luck crossing the pond again!

I love you, Dad. Keep making us proud ( : I can't wait to see you and Tobs AND our new puppy (Mom's excited about the dog too, though you know she won't admit it). Like I told Toby, the Charleston Amistad Host Committee has a lot planned for your arrival! See you soon for some she-crab at Hominy Grill...
