B-Watch stood the 1300-1900 (1:00 - 7:00 PM) watch. I took another noon sight with the sextant. We had an interesting class. Mickey discussed his island of Bermuda, and we talked about weather. Johnny led A-Watch in the "rubber ducky" dance, of which I had a fun preview as I was coming onto watch, bleary-eyed, at 2300 (11:00 PM) last night. Then it rained. Two sort bursts. Carla hadn't seen rain in 6 months; Amistad hasn't seen rain since October. It smelled like rain, hints of earth and sky that offer contrast to our regular ocean smells.
Our wind and speed picked up today. At one point we reached 10 knots. Everyone is getting excited to reach Barbados. It feels like we just passed the half-way point, and now we are almost all of the way across. It always amazes me how fast these transits go. My second transatlantic. Who knows if I will ever be out here again, so I am trying to savor every moment, each line of the ship, the sunrises and sunsets. We had a field day the other day (we clean Amistad top to bottom). After being down in the main saloon for a few hours, I came up on deck. I had been so engrossed in cleaning that I almost forgot I was sailing across the Atlantic.
Fogo, the wonder dog, is getting bigger (though she is still quite small). It is fun to see her personality grow as she explores the ship, followed around by her 16 crew-in-waiting. Each nautical mile we sail we all grow, in days and experience.
