Love the Comments! E-mail

I have just read the comments that people left for me on the website! It made me so happy that I actually postponed my shower to write this note! (That is a big deal, especially out here, because we don't get many opportunities to stay clean!) I just wanted to thank everyone who wrote; you all have no idea how good it feels to have your support. Family: it is such a relief to know that you are reading the blog and know that I am OK! Friends and anonymous readers: I didn't actually realize that my notes were being read all around the world. The Internet is a very powerful tool and it's wonderful to be able to communicate, even though I am far away from everything and everyone.

The entry that had more comments was the one about the confrontation I had with my colleague. That actually made me think more about the episode and I felt bad for everything that happened. It's hard to be here: surrounded by the ocean, away from friends and family, and working hard. That has an effect in all of us. But I try not to forget how lucky I am to be here, and how much this voyage means to me as a young journalist, as a Brazilian and as a human rights defender. I am very glad to be here, and I will try to be more tolerant. I think this is a great opportunity to bring people from all around the world closer together.

We are almost half way to Barbados and it is a good time to reflect. I will write later about the mid-way ceremony that we will have today, but I can already tell you that I have donated my Brazilians coins to throw overboard. I want to honor the captives that suffered on their way to Brazil, and also the ones that never made it.

Mum, Dad, Brother, Boyfriend, Friends: I loved your messages and they really give me strength to be here. Please keep them coming! I can't wait to see all of you to tell everything about this adventure! My dogs, Max and Feijao: you would love Fogo, especially because it's a girl! If you met, she would teach you how to catch flying fish and how to stay balanced in a boat! Miss you all!

It is so funny the way words, with the same meanings, in different languages, can misslead you completely. When I first read about "the pet" Fogo onboard, I wondered if it was a bird; a cat; a dog; a guine pig; a golden fish or what?! But then I thought: 1. it can't be a bird, because a bird would have to be kept it in a cage, and that would go against the whole idea of freedom that this trip is all about; 2. it shouldn't be a cat because, even though the former slave ship Amistad could benefit from a cat to hunt ininvided mice onboard, I don't think today's ( the replica) Amistad ship has mice onboard - apart from the fact that, as far as I know, cats hate water; 3. a guine pig would be sort of useless in a ship (sorry, guine pigs!!!!), and 4. a fish, I believe, is something you do not miss at all in the middle of the ocean! My guess was OK, then, in thinking that Fogo was actualy a dog. However, the word "fogo", in Portuguese, means "fire" and it is a masculine word: so, I mistook the ship´s pet for a male puppy. Stupid me! Now I realised that "Fogo" is actually a female dog, named after "a Ilha do Fogo". And then, of course, it is a female because if it reffers to the "island", which is a feminine word and not to the "fire"- a masculine word. In any case, Max and Feijão, our male dogs would love to get to know Fogo. All I can think is how much fun they would have going after flying fish onboard with Fogo!
I'll write to you again latter. Much love. Mãe.
