Amistad has reached day ten of the great transatlantic, about the halfway point of the historic middle passage. The weather has been tranquil, and for the most part, so have the moods of our crew. At this point of the trip, I have begun to wonder about certain people such as Paul Bryant Smith. Where is he? What is he doing? What is he thinking about right now? What about Drew and Allison? Are they still traveling around Africa? Eliza has been telling us that the second part of the transatlantic will go much faster than the first, which makes me want to enjoy every day like it is the last.
However, I’m excited to reach Barbados. I have always thought of it as a Caribbean paradise of sorts, but now that I know more about its history I am even more intrigued. Turns out, Barbados was one of the biggest sugar plantation islands of the slave trade era, importing thousands and thousands of slaves during its history. It will be fascinating to explore the island and its numerous historic sites.
Last night, a few of the Sierra Leoneans and I watched “Saving Private Ryan” on the computer. It was interesting to see how they reacted to a war movie. There were a lot of laughs, which I found curious.
I want to take this opportunity to send a message to my mother: Hello mom, how is CT? How is life on your own? I hope you are enjoying the peace and quiet and getting everything that you want done, done. Dad and I both miss you. Speaking of Dad, he has been talking of blogging for a week now, and once again claims that today is the day. Keep your eyes out for the debut of Ben Clarkson Blogging.
Hello to Courtney, Jen, Chris, Stan, Nick, Ally, Justin, Linda, Phil, Michael, Nick, Alex, Myette, Bill, Mellie, Aunt Suellen, and Uncle Dick. Hello to everyone else I can’t think of at this very moment. Love and miss you all.
By the way, Mickey still won’t come down out of the rigging.
