Who is B-Watch?

We are one of the three working groups on Amistad. We are the largest watch, 5 in all, and each member has a different nationality. Mickey, our mate/leader is from Bermuda; Carla is from Brazil; Chris is from England; Joy is from the United States; Vincent is from Sierra Leone.

This morning, B-Watch’s adventures began with the ringing of a bell. We were on night watch. At about 2340 (11:40 PM), a flying fish flew over the starboard bow (at an altitude of  20 feet; velocity, 5 kts). It almost hit Mickey, the mate, on the head, but luckily our fearless leader had just leaned back to examine the sails. After having barely missed Mickey’s head, the fish flew into the ship’s bell, making it ring. After hitting the bell, we were pretty sure that he or she had a headache. The doctor was asleep and therefore the fish couldn’t be examined, so we threw it overboard.

After a morning of sleep, the Bee-Watchers, having dreamt of Brazil, Bermuda, and a boyfriend, were ready for the pin chase [belaying pins hold the ship's lines; chasing is describing what each line controls—ed.]. Of course, we had studied hard, but were humble in mindset. Everyone worked together, and we were the first watch to identify all of the lines we were given to name on the ship. It was a close race, as the other two watches finished shortly after us. We were very happy to receive first place, and are also glad that all of our shipmates did so well.

With love from all of us,

B-Watch (Mickey, Carla, Chris, Joy, and Vincent)
