Today we saw two whales! When someone called out that there was something in the water, I had just said to Joy how much I wished we would see animal life during this trip. So I ran out to the bow (front) of the boat and shouted out: “Dolphins!” But actually there were two whales very near the boat, later identified as sperm whales.
This huge mammal is the largest of the tooth whales, and can grow up to 36 feet (female) and 59 feet (male). We think it was a female and her calf, because it’s common for them to travel up and down the Atlantic Ocean in groups. It is very curious how the sperm whale comes up for air and then dives for about 40 minutes, hunting in deep waters.
On another note, during the night shift, something very unpleasant happened. One of the members of my watch was very rude and impolite with his colleagues, including myself. At first, I got angry at his attitude, but then I just felt sorry for him. He clearly has issues and brought them along on this trip. That is a shame, because I don’t think someone should cross the Atlantic Ocean without being spiritually prepared. It takes a lot of patience and positive thinking. And people should treat each other nicely, no matter what conditions.

Sperm Whales ... in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean...what a wondereful sight you and your collegues must have had! You guys are all so lucky! How many people in the world will have this chance in their whole life time?
As for the other issue, regarding the tension between crew members during the night shift, I suggest you remember the Sankofa meaning: "reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward."
