If I was at home right now I might be woken up, probably at 6:00 in the morning, by my brother in law. We might venture out in a snow storm to join friends at a Hartford pub for some morning Irish music, food and drink. I might also visit my parents' for some corned beef and cabbage. Today, 6 days out from Praia, I awoke at 6:00 in the morning with a nice wake-up from Johnny. Breakfast was decorated with some green beads and a morning Saint Paddy's day message from another crew member. B watch had the deck from 0700 until 1300. We worked the deck wearing green bracelets and necklaces. We had class and discussed Saint Patrick's Day for our non-North American crew. We also engaged in conversation about ways to honor the middle passage during this voyage. After class we practiced measuring sun height with sextants (first step in the long but fascinating process of celestial navigation). Dinner was a fantastic beef and gravy dish complimented by cabbage and other veggies. Carla, our Brazilian crew member, thought the beef tasted just like her mom's; turns out it was Brazilian beef. Our taste buds know. The piece de resistance was Dani's delicious Irish soda bread. The moon is out, glowing white with a golden halo. It is nearing full, three quarters of the way up the sky. Cumulous clouds are softened to a bluish grey, streaks of pink in the background as day gently slips into night. The wind and speed picked up slightly and we are still gliding gently along at a very comfortable pace. There is a cool breeze where skin tries to figure out if it is cold or not. It is about 7:45. I'm going to catch some sleep before my 11pm - 3am watch. Lots of love to all of my family and friends. Happy Saint Patrick's Day! Slainte!
