Trying to follow my Father's advice E-mail

“Make sure you write in your journal everyday,” my father said. I have a beautiful book with nautical designs and a picture of Amistad gingerly posted on the inside cover in which to pour my thoughts, thanks to a gift from my dad. I’ve jotted some notes down, but have rarely gotten them to the computer due to a bit of fatigue in adjusting to shipboard life, as well as a desire to fully experience the port I was in while given the chance. At night I would intend to write, but often sleep would win the battle between my eyelids and the pen, resulting in an illegible, trailing mark left on the page.

As I sit to write about my wonderful, eye-opening experiences in Sierra Leone and Cabo Verde, I can already feel the intensity of the moment vanishing. The following, probably in a few installments, will be my best attempt at recollecting the experiences, flavors and human spirit I encountered since January 27, 2008.
