Calm, sunny day E-mail

The weather has remained warm, calm and sunny. I got off watch at 0700 this morning, had a delicious breakfast of French toast and sausage and then helped with cleaning soles and bowls. I took a nice shower, a treat since I wasn’t being thrown around as we sat in the clam water. I then took a nap and awoke to a man over board drill. We debriefed the drill, and then conducted a fire drill. I took a half hour nap and then dined on exquisite fish that a captain had given us in Praia. I think his name was Carlos, captain of Sal Rei (Sun Ray), a ferry we had seen quite often in Cape Verde. The fish was huge ad luckily we were able to thank him on the radio as we departed Praia. Dinner was delicious, fish in a soy sesame seed crust, fresh bread with the savory, creamy Portuguese butter, and the sweet potatoes that are not pink. They are slightly less sweet than the ones I have encountered in the States, and I absolutely love them. Currently B watch is on night watch until 2300 (11pm). The moon and a few stars are out. Last night, on the 3-7am watch, the sky was brilliantly lit with stars and moon. The Big Dipper and Southern Cross pointing North and South. I love looking at the Southern Cross. It appeared huge in the night sky in Sierra Leone, and now appears a bit smaller. Later, when we head north, it will disappear from sight. On to new stars. There are songs people sing about the Southern Cross. How lucky are we to see that which many people only get a chance to sing about.
