I swear this mosquito is just hanging around waiting for me to finish with my regiment of Malarone before it makes the attack on my skin. Two more pills left. That must mean we’ve been out for three full days.
What the heck was I dreaming about again?
I think it was about my black cat October (renamed Jack by my mother). That’s silly, I don’t have a cat right now. Not here. And here is all there is. If I go to sleep right now I can get exactly 5 hours and 37 minutes of rest until it’s time for me to get up again. You would think with 3 watches on a Sweedish-split schedule I would have lots of time to not only sleep, but read both my personal books as well as from the boat’s library, write, do projects, etc. Right now, I stand my watch, eat, clean, sleep, stand another watch, sleep… lather rinse repeat.
It’s not that I feel like I’m lazy, mind you, it’s just that I’m so tired. But then again, it’s only been three days into the voyage. Hopefully I’ll
adapt to this clock within the next day or so. I’m sick and tired of
feeling sick and tired.
I try to readjust my position for better sleeping. My bunk is about the size of a coffin and all of my personal belongings are in with me (on this tack, I tend to sleep on them). I’m not complaining, mind you. I’ve figured out if I use my boat-issued pillow as a barrier for either my effects or the lee-board (depending on the tack), I can actually make a wedge to sleep more comfortably. You make the best out of what you’ve got. Never more true, then when one’ is away from everyone and everything.
I have yet to see one dolphin, but I have seen the some shooting stars. They make me happy. Sailing makes me happy. Happy crew members make me happy. I’m still working on 20,000 Leauges Under the Sea. Nemo says “A sound mind and a full stomach are man’s true treasures.” I would like to add “A warm dry safe place to sleep and laughter amongst friends.” I have all four. I also have a mosquito hovering somewhere near my ear. THWAP! Make that I did.
-Elaine “Insane” Eno 3rd Mate of S/V Amistad 14 March 2008 P.S. “Hi Mom! I love you!”
I do hope all is well with everyone at home and that the summer heat has finally broken. We had our own little heat wave as we rode with the Gulf Stream. The water temperature stayed in the 70s and sleeping at night was uncomfortable. Its a lot cooler now that we have passed through. The current weather is more like I remember back when I first sailed these waters with the Coast Guard Cutter” Mendota”. I can’t believe that this was 40 plus years ago.
To Myriam I send my love and kisses. You are missed more than you can imagine. Have you given any thought to meeting in England ?
