Today was one of those days where I had twelve hours off and really didn’t take advantage. When I wasn’t sleeping or eating, I managed to go aloft with Elaine, unfurl the topsail, then climb back down. When you are aloft, the ocean seems a lot smaller. I have gotten pretty used to being up there, and actually really enjoy myself. One of these days I will take my camera up there with me, once I get the guts and am not afraid of dropping it the 100+ plus feet down to the deck.
I just finished reading “A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier,” written by Ishmael Beah. Ishmael was a child soldier throughout the nineteen nineties in Sierra Leone. The book has completely dominated my thoughts for the last couple days. It is such a powerful story that truly makes me see my own life in a much larger picture. I consistently find myself throughout the day stopping and thinking about his life and the lives of other child soldiers, which make the seemingly mundane tasks that I encounter, seem almost obsolete. I recommend the book to anyone who likes an intense read and wants to obtain yet another outlook on this crazy and at times perplexing world. Toby Comments
