29 January 2008, FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE
The Government wharf in Freetown Harbour, the mid-point of the historic 14-month voyage called the Atlantic Freedom Tour by the Freedom Schooner Amistad will be the scene of a colorful departure on 3 February 2008.
At 4:00 P.M. 31 January 2008 at the Cape Sierra Hotel, a press conference will provide details of the event and allow the media the opportunity to interview key members of the crew and staff of AMISTAD America Inc., some of whom have been in Sierra Leone since the vessels arrival in early December of 2007.
The schooner will depart Freetown with a national farewell celebration and will set sail north, up the coast of West Africa, to join in an international remembrance with Senegal officials and the people of Goree Island, Dakar. The Amistad will briefly call upon the the historic islands of Cape Verde before beginning its return transatlantic crossing along the route of the infamous Middle Passage.
Join us to hear the latest news of our stay in Sierra Leone and how the story of Sengbe Pieh as a leader and national symbol of determination and pride has impacted our efforts. And the message of Sierra Leone we will take abroad as we venture forth. Learn about plans for our future relations with our host nation.
