Please be sure to use the following conventions when referring to the organization and/or the vessel:
When referring to the organization, it is printed as AMISTAD America, Inc. for the initial mention and can subsequently be referred to as AMISTAD America.
When referring to the vessel, please use Freedom Schooner Amistad or Amistad. The name of the ship is always italicized.
Amistad is a re-creation of the original vessel, La Amistad. It is not a reproduction. A replica or reproduction suggests that it is an exact duplicate and the vessel is not.
Always refer to the Amistad Incident as either The Amistad Incident of 1839 or the Amistad Incident. In this case, the word "Amistad" does not have to be italicized.
Please be aware that the original La Amistad was never a slave ship and refrain from referring to it and Freedom Schooner Amistad as such. Read "Was the original Amistad a slave ship?" and our other Frequently Asked Questions to learn more.
