The 18-month voyage, called the Atlantic Freedom Tour, will retrace the infamous slave industry triangle with stops at nearly 20 ports which played a significant role in the trade and reflect today's social, political, and cultural character resulting from the African Diaspora created by the trade. Her route will cover 14,000 miles and engage millions of people in recognizing the strength, survival, and contributions of slaves to the countries of the Atlantic Basin as well as our need in today's society to be vigilant that the values of respect, honor, and collaboration serve to benefit our global society. At the mid-point of the voyage, Amistad will sail into the harbor of Freetown, Sierra Leone, the original West African homeland of many of the Amistad captives and where they were returned after their ordeal. This symbolic "homecoming" will be a capstone event during this 2007-2008 Atlantic Freedom Tour.
