Sailing under 4 lowers and square topsail
Gybed this morning at 11 am - first maneuver since setting sail 2 days ago. Weather is incredible - light NNE'ly winds force 3 - following 3 ft seas -
Wafting between 5 and 6 knots -
Breaching whales in AM
Celestial navigation ramping up - the Maine Maritime team is competing fro perfect star fixes at dawn and dusk, students ands other crew are trying to figure out what path the sun is taking each day - seems a bit weird to some
- for example the sun did not rise due east this morning it rose at 115 degrees on the compass - about 25 degrees south of east.... Hmmmm....
We are just beginning to get our feet wet.....

Students are beginning to lead the watches - catching up on things they forgot or grew rusty on.....

Crew happy to finally be off the dock and back in our routines.

Readings are happening everywhere - each student is working on a book report with crew, whole ship's company is reading Black Jacks - a ground breaking history of African American sailors and maritime trades.

And we are working on finding the Canary Islands - still several days away.
