AMISTAD JOURNEY - On Monday, September 18th, thanks to a unique and informal partnership with Freedom Schooner Amistad, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Halifax broadcasted a short television documentary on the voyage of three African Nova Scotian teenagers from Halifax to Portland Maine, in August of 2006. It turned out to be a life-changing journey for Julian Colley, Courtney Williams and Brandon Tolliver. They absorbed the story of the Amistad captives, and applied those lessons to find inner strength as they dealt with seasickness and homesickness along three other students from Connecticut -Joseph Flamang, Christopher Palmierie and Jacob Anderson. They learned to rely overcome their fears and rely on help from the seasoned crew and captain Eliza Garfield as Freedom Schooner Amistad sailed into a true sou’west gale.

On-board photographer, Wojtek Wacowski, agreed to use a video camera provided by CBC, to document for us this particular voyage. In the words of CBC producer, Marie Thompson, (who never left home port in Halifax!) he “ beautifully captured the visual spirit of life on board the ship, the experiences the boys faced and the energy of the schooner at sea.”

The documentary was produced by Marie Thompson from CBC Halifax, NS - it is presented on our website courtesy of CBC
