Early this morning we had great sailing with three sails set: the main, fore and staysail. C watch had set the staysail yesterday afternoon, under Third Mate Hannah's direction. It was great team work - we got help from Heather, the new cook. When we came back on watch early this morning, the three sails were still set, but the main was reefed, the first time I had seen that. It's a wonderful sense of continuity and interdependence as the three watches work together to keep Amistad sailing.
C watch was on duty during yesterday's class, so crew members were unable to attend, but Chief Mate Paul came on deck and read an exciting excerpt from a sailor's story about a harrowing voyage, undertaken when he was 15. Earlier in the day, we had a lesson on anchoring and scope. Today's class was about reefing.
The students are working diligently on their Sankofa College projects.
