Taking out the trash E-mail

We are making our way through the English channel to Lisbon, taking our time to avoid unfavorable weather. Late September in England has proven to be a bit too cold for me and I am anxious to make it down to warmer ports. However, I know we'll be lingering in England a while longer because there is one offshore practice we're not yet doing. We are not yet separating food, paper, and metal from plastic trash.  Have you ever thought of how waste is disposed of on a multi-week offshore voyage?  Amistad has enough interesting smells without two-week-old food trash overtaking the decks.
Once we are far enough offshore, we can toss all our leftovers into the sea and watch them drift away with the current. Vessels throughout the oceans use the sea not only for travel and recreation, but also for waste disposal. Our plastic waste remains on board and I find creative ways to pack it down for maximum storage until it can go to a landfill.  While we are close to shore and anchoring in ports, our trash is all combined and thrown into harbor dumpsters.  So, once our trash is separated, I'll know Amistad is on its way to fun in the sun!  ~Trash Engineer, Eve
