Freedom Schooner Amistad reached her main destination of the 2007/2008 Atlantic Freedom Tour - Freetown in Sierra Leone.  At noon on Friday, December 7th, the ship under the command of Captain Eliza Garfield sailed into harbor welcomed by a pilot boat carrying among  the first Master of the Schooner - Captain Bill Pinkney. After very brief Immigration and Customs clearing procedures the Freedom Schooner sailed to her designated safe anchorage next to Government Wharf and Navy base where she will await untill Sunday, Dec 9th - the day of the Official Landing Ceremony.

The ship and the crew are in  great shape and excited to visit Sierra Leone.

The Amistad's crew landed on African soil after anchoring the ship and had a 'family' dinner on shore together with the members of the official Amistad America delegation. Even this informal landing, just after sunset was an opportunity to learn how enthusiastic the people of Sierra Leone are to welcome the Amistad and her crew.

I am thinking tonight about Paul Cuffe (1759-1817), the New England whaling captain, merchant, and abolitionist, of African and Wampanoag (indigenous) heritage, who on this date, December 10, 1815, sailed for Sierra Leone to further his project of creating economic development in Sierra Leone, productive trade between Sierra Leone and the United States, and opportunities for freed African-Americans to return to Africa. I think he would be thrilled to know of your voyage and the links you are forging. Honor him as one of your ancestors.

about the rich history this event has brought to our land, moreover it will add to
revitalize the tourism industry.I was present at the celebration together with my

i wanted you to know that the wood of which the Amistad is built is from the forest acroos from my home here on Hilton Head Island, SC So i know the Amistad is a vey durable Schooner because I watched those trees grow to mighty oaks.

Love,
