Invite Amistad to visit a port near you...

Freedom Schooner Amistad is a unique monument in American History.  One must travel to New York to see the Statue of Liberty, to South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore. Traveling to Washington D.C. is the only way for school teachers to let their students to reflect over  history while visiting Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial,  World War II  Memorial or Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial.  'Monuments are history made visible' -.wrote  the noted author Judith Dupre in her book Monuments - America's History In Art And Memory. 'The very process of deciding how an event should be remembered allows reconciliation with the event itself, and in doing so frees history to move forward.'

The Freedom Schooner Amistad visits ports around Atlantic Ocean as a monument of freedom, justice and human cooperation among all races and religions.  The message is founded on the telling of the Amistad Story where kidnapped Africans were set free by a pro-slavery U.S. Supreme Court because black and white abolitionists work tirelessly to win their freedom. The Amistad is one of a very few monuments that can be actually invited to your neighborhood (as long as there is enough water and bridges on the way are not to low.)

Scheduling port visits  takes  a long time. Amistad America  receives  many contradicting requests - a traditional sailing ship just can't be in Louisiana and Great Lakes in one season.  The 2007/2008 Atlantic Freedom Tour took away the Freedom Schooner for a year from the home waters of New England. To offset that Amistad will spend entire 2009 sailing season on the East Coast of America.

Invite the Freedom Schooner Amistad to a port near you - we would love to visit every port around Atlantic.

As part of its Community of Inclusion dialogues, the Coast Guard Academy has partnered with Amistad America to provide an immersive experience to Coast Guard cadets and the entire Academy community.

This opportunity has also been opened to local New London schoolchildren through the Academy's Partnership in Education program as part of our outreach and enrichment efforts.

"The end goal of our efforts is to build a stronger, respect driven community from diversity by creating a shared experience and environment where difference is understood, appreciated and embraced -- where the whole becomes more than the sum of its parts," said Antonio Farias, Coast Guard Academy Director of Diversity Affairs. "The Amistad experience is just one opportunity in a series that will move us along this road."

The Amistad is currently moored at Eagle Pier on the Academy's grounds where cadets, officer candidates, members of the Academy and their families and local schoolchildren are able to tour Amistad and learn about its intense history.

Freedom Schooner Amistad will be on Martha's Vineyard September 3rd, 4th, and 5th.  Come take a day-sail from Vineyard Haven. For reservations call 203 641 5660.

Shauntay Grant - Poet from Nova Scotia

Shauntay Grant, the Poet Laureate of Halifax wrote "a song for sengbe" - a poem especially to welcome Amistad to Halifax for Black Loyalist 175, our celebration of the 175th anniversary of the abolition of slavery throughout British territories on August 1, 1834. She read the poem as part of the Civic Welcome for Amistad last Saturday.

from a song for sengbe

...
destined for greatness
born to lead
he was poseidon and mandela wrapped in one spirit

his wave moved people to look and
extend that blip in the page of some history book
building a legacy of purpose
justice
and splendor
birthed a schooner named Freedom
that begs we remember

...

The Freedom Schooner Amistad is visiting Nova Scotia this summer, She recently took part in 2009 Tall Ships Nova Scotia and is just returning to Halifax for Black Freedom 175, the celebration of the 175th anniversary of the abolition of slavery by the British Parliament on August 1, 1834.

The Amistad Freedom Society of Nova Scotia is the organizer of Black Freedom 175. Over the course of the month that Amistad will be in Nova Scotia, we will collaborate with a number of groups—Tall Ships 2009, Alderney Landing, the local Tall Ships organizing committees in Louisbourg, Sydney and Pictou, and the Black Loyalist Heritage Society and the Anglican Church—to enable ten racially and ethnically mixed groups of young people to participate in workshops that build leadership, explore the richness of diversity, celebrate freedom and then provide an opportunity to sail aboard Amistad and learn how, when you're straining to raise a sail on the deck of a traditional vessel,  the colour of the skin of person next to you matters not at all. Each group will include between 20 and 30 young people. We call these programs Youth Leadership for Freedom.

This work with young people is at the very heart of the Freedom Schooner Amistad’s mission and it is core of our Black Freedom 175 celebrations. However, the full Black Freedom 175 program also includes a variety of concerts, theatrical presentations, receptions, and an opportunity for the public to tour the ship.

The part of Black Freedom 175 for which the Amistad Freedom Society of Nova Scotia is directly responsible takes place in Halifax from August 1 through August 9. However, from August 10 through August 17 we are collaborating with groups in Dartmouth, Louisbourg, Sydney, Pictou and Shelburne / Birchtown to carry the programs for young people that form the heart of our celebration.
