Between Alamo and Gettysburg Memorial E-mail
Written by AAI

Between Alamo and Gettysburg Memorial - this is where Judith Dupre placed the Amistad as one of the great American Monuments in her recently published book: "Monuments: America's History in Art and Memory"

In the author's words: "Monuments are our response to the collective need to remember, revisit, and delineate the dreams of history. The best memorials are not mere relics, but extraordinarily rich communications from the past, living history books that illuminate societal, political, and cultural values at specific moments in time."

MUCH MORE than a "coffee table" book!  Getting five stars readers' reviews - highly recommended as a gift and opportunity to learn American History.

"...  fascinating and unusual book is beautifully produced..."

"...Wow, and wow again!"

"...The sheer beauty of this book shines on every page..."

"...both thoughtful and captivating..."

"The Amistad Rebellion, which began with the determination of Sengbe Pieh and fifty-two other Sierra Leoneans not to accept enforced slavery, has had far reaching consequences on two continents. Although the origins are mostly forgotten today, the processes set in motion by this revolt will continue to influence the course of historical development in both the United States and Sierra Leone -- thanks, in large measure, to the courage of Sengbe Pieh."  concludes Dr. Arthur Abraham, one of Sierra Leone's foremost historians in a publication of  the U.S. State Department "AMISTAD REVOLT" published in full in our History section pages and available also as download of ready to print Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files in three languages : English , French and Spanish.

Great reading and educational resource that AMISTAD America recommends to teachers and students.

Captain Bill Pinkney - The First Master of SV AmistadIn 1992, this Chicago native became the first Black man to sail solo around the world, taking the southern route around the five great capes, through waters considered to be the most dangerous on the globe. In November 1998, he embarked on a second trip, setting sail from the Caribbean, leading a group of educators on an historic voyage to retrace the “Middle Passage” slave trade routes used during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A charismatic, naturally gifted speaker and storyteller, Pinkney is now inspiring audiences nationwide with the story of his two remarkable voyages and there application to business and day to day living.
