Prince George's next week will host the Freedom Schooner Amistad's arrival for its National Homecoming.

Amistad, a recreation of the original vessel called La Amistad, will be on display from Sept. 16 to 22.

"We feel privileged and indeed honored to host and be the first mid-Atlantic Freedom Schooner Amistad stop during the boat's tour," said Prince George's County Executive Jack B. Johnson. "It is my sincere hope that the community-at-large will take advantage of this historical and significant educational opportunity for all ages."

Amistad was an integral part of the Amistad Incident of 1839, the first civil rights case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. The Port Visit to the National Harbor is commemorating the 1808 signing of the United States Law abolishing the African slave trade. The American laws enacted March 1807, with the law coming into force on Jan. 1, 1808.

While docked at National Harbor, Amistad will be available to the general public for tours. In addition, an exhibit associated with the vessel will be on display in the County Administration Building's first floor lobby area located at 14741 Governor Oden Bowie Drive, Upper Marlboro. The exhibit and vessel tours are both free to the public.
