CONDEMNED FOR SLAVERY
Niger has been found responsible
of failing to protect 24-year-old Hadijatou Mani from slavery. The
judgement was delivered in Niamey, the capital of Niger today (Monday
27 October) by the Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community
of West African States (ECOWAS).

Ten-year-old Nujood Mohammed
Ali from Yemen was honored in New York last week for her fight against
early marriage. Nujood was named as a Glamour Magazines Women

FOR 20,000 PEOPLE AS NEPAL ABOLISHES BONDED LABOUR PRACTICE
Anti-Slavery International,
the world's oldest human rights organisation, welcomes the decision
by the government of Nepal to free 20,000 people in slavery by abolishing
the local bonded labour practice of 'haliya'. The organisation
also calls for official support to help the freed labourers find
alternative livelihoods and to protect discriminated people from
becoming victims of slavery in Nepal.

ACTION ON FORCED LABOUR AND EXPLOITATION OF DOMESTIC WORKERS IN
THE PHILIPPINES
Domestic workers in the Philippines,
the vast majority of whom are women and girls, are not given the
same protections as other workers under labour laws and work in
other people's homes hidden from public view. This leaves them particularly
vulnerable to abuse and exploitation, and many are the victims of
forced labour. Many domestic workers migrate from rural areas to
the cities and are vulnerable to trafficking, as well as to debt
bondage. A Domestic Workers Bill, which would protect them, has
been delayed for several years by Presidential impeachment proceedings
and various other postponements. Act now to urge the Philippines
Government to prioritise this legislation and ensure that it passes
without further delay.
